2-Stroke FAQ

+ I turned my Idle screw both ways, why won't my bike idle?

This is one of the most common tuning errors we see. Our carb functions differently than an OEM carb and requires a certain amount of idle gap to function properly. Our two stroke carbs need a gap of 5/64" (2mm).

For two stroke carbs, if your idle is too high or too low, the bike will not stay running, or is hard to start, you need to adjust your metering rod richer or leaner until the bike idles well at the correct idle gap. If the idle is too high, your rod setting is too lean and needs to be richened (clockwise). If the idle is too low, your rod setting is too rich and needs to be leaned out (counterclockwise). The idle screw should only be used for fine tuning the idle up or down after the metering rod setting is finalized.

+ What is the recommended oil and ratio to run with my carb?

Most well known brands make a good product. We recommend picking a brand, using the oil they recommend for your riding type (trails, mx, desert, etc), and running it at the ratio they recommend. Each oil is different and is engineered to be used at a certain ratio. If the factory recommended ratio for a given oil isn't working for you double check that you are using the right oil for your application.

+ What is the factory starting length for my metering rod?

Each rod will have a different starting length and will vary based on the batch and what we think is a good tune based off of your specs. They are always measured from the tip of the rod to the brass ring on the slide in inches (to the thousandth). Do not collapse the spring when measuring. The starting length can be found based on the carb serial number if ordered from a supplier, or if ordered directly from Lectron, it will be on your invoice and stored electronically in our system.

+ I'm installing an aftermarket head, pipe, reeds etc. What do I need to change?

Try riding it with your current settings first. All bikes and combinations of aftermarket parts are different and minor rod tuning may be required based on how that specific part interacts with the rest of your bike.

+ My throttle cable end is smaller than the hole in the slide, do I have the wrong cable?

Our slides are designed to fit a variety of cable end sizes. If your cable end is smaller than the hole size that is perfectly acceptable.

+ How do I start my bike with a Lectron?

The easiest way to start your bike is as follows:

1. Turn on the fuel
2. Turn on the choke
3. Slowly kick the bike over 3 to 5 times to prime the choke and find TDC (no throttle)
4. Give one hard kick to start the bike (no throttle). The bike should start on this kick. Once running you will need to turn off the choke immediately as the choke is very rich. You may need to give the bike some throttle once its started to keep it running while turning the choke off.
5. If the bike doesn’t start after 3 hard kicks, turn the choke off for your remaining kicks until it starts to avoid flooding it. If it regularly needs more than 5 kicks to start, your bike may not be tuned optimally, or there is an underlying mechanical issue.
6. If the bike absolutely will not start, try blocking off all but one of your vent lines with your thumb and blow into the remaining vent for about 2 seconds to prime the engine. This will get your bike running so you can identify what underlying issue you may have. This is not a long term solution.

+ Why does my bike sound rich, but run great?

Metering rod carbs draw fuel differently and sound different from a jetted carb. Tune for the best performance, not the best sound. DO NOT tune your bike on a stand in neutral!! You will likely tune the bike too lean if you're used to tuning a conventional carb that way.

+ Why is there air in my fuel line?

All fuel lines will have some air in them. The difference is now you can see it in our transparent lines and you couldn’t in the black line.

+ Do I need to drain the fuel from my float bowl?

Yes, if you plan to leave the bike sitting for more than a few weeks it is recommended to drain the fuel from your bowl. This will increase the life of the components within it.

+ I have a wandering idle, what should I adjust?

In 2-stroke applications a wandering idle can be the result of a lean condition or a potential air leak. Each carb is thoroughly tested prior to being shipped out, so if your idle isn't able to be correct within the normal tolerance of the adjustments, we recommend performing a leak down test to ensure your engine is healthy.

+ Which way is the metering rod suppose to face?

The Flat face of the rod with the etched numbers should always face towards the engine.

4-Stroke FAQ

+ What type of fuel is recommended for 4-Strokes?

We recommend using premium fuel with a minimum octane rating of 91 for all 4-stroke applications. Lower-quality or low-octane fuel can cause tuning issues, poor performance, and starting problems—not just with our carburetors, but with any carb system. For the best results, stick with fresh, high-quality fuel to ensure consistent combustion and optimal throttle response.

+ My throttle cable end is smaller than the hole in the slide, do I have the wrong cable?

Our slides are designed to fit a variety of cable end sizes. If your cable end is smaller than the hole size that is perfectly acceptable.

+ What do I do with the electrical connections?

Our four stroke applications will no longer utilize any of the connections that went to the OEM carb. These can be unplugged and tucked away. This will have no effect on the run ability of the machine.

+ What is the best way to clean a Lectron carb.

The Lectron carbs are very simple devices and require very little maintenance due to the few components used and large orifices within. This means you can simply use compressed air and WD-40 to clean your unit.

+ Why does my bike sputter in the mid to top end?

This is commonly related to a rich condition. We recommend first adjusting the torque jet circuit clockwise to lean out this circuit. If the symptoms persist, move to the power jet and repeat the same steps to lean out the mixture. If the symptoms still exist, you will want to lean the metering rod. We recommend a 1/4 turn counterclockwise at a time until the symptoms disappear.

+ Can I store my bike with fuel in the bowl?

As simple as the Lectron is, we do recommend draining the bowl to prolong the life of the internal components. Also, as an added note: Using fuel stabilizers can be harmful to certain components.

+ My float bowl won't fill, what is the problem?

If you are experiencing fuel delivery symptoms this usually caused by ventilation issues with the gas cap or vent line on the carb. It is important to make sure the vents are routed away from hot objects and aren't squeezed or pinched. If the vents are free flowing, check that the petcock is flowing strong with the fuel line disconnected from the carb.

+ How do I route my vent lines?

Run your vent lines directly down by your swing arm. If you frequently go through deep water crossings, route one to your frame or air box. Make sure not to squeeze the lines when using zip ties.

+ Which way is the metering rod suppose to face?

The Flat face of the rod with the etched numbers should always face towards the engine.

+ Why is there air in my fuel line?

All fuel lines will have some air in them. The difference is now you can see it in our transparent lines and you couldn’t in the black line.

+ I'm going to an aftermarket cam, exhaust, airbox etc. What do I need to change?

Try riding it with your current settings first. All bikes and combinations of aftermarket parts are different and minor rod tuning may be required based on how that specific part interacts with the rest of your bike.
